What is Addiction?
At GENSAT (Gender Specific Addiction Treatment), we understand addiction not as a moral failing, but as a complex set of behaviours that can be understood, addressed, and changed. Addiction is serious, but recovery is possible and people can rebuild their lives in ways that feel right to them.
Compulsive Behaviour Patterns
Addiction often begins as a coping mechanism, something that offers excitement, distraction, achievement, or escape. Over time, however, these behaviours can become difficult to control, even when they no longer bring pleasure or begin to cause harm.
Understanding the Whole Person
We recognise that addiction rarely exists in isolation. Many women facing substance misuse also deal with stress, trauma, social stigma, or mental health challenges. At GENSAT, we don't label or shame. Instead, we take time to understand each woman's unique context, needs, and goals.
A Public Health Approach
Our work is grounded in a public health perspective. We don't impose rigid definitions of recovery, but instead support each woman to decide what change and progress look like for her, whether that's reducing harm, regaining stability, or aiming for long-term wellness.
Evidence-Informed, Person-Centred Support
Our approach is built on respect and proven therapeutic strategies:
- Motivational, strength-based interventions to build confidence and autonomy
- Trauma-informed, non-judgmental support that protects dignity and safety
- Harm reduction strategies to help women move forward at their own pace
- Holistic support for related challenges like childcare, housing, or mental health
- Flexible delivery options, including in-person and online sessions
We believe in walking alongside you, not as someone trying to fix a problem, but as a partner in your healing journey.
